If you asked a bride what she would dearly love before her Wedding Day, it would probably be to see her full look for the big day, her gown, make-up and hair all together for just a moment. We just need to know how it’s all going to work together.
But let’s just stop a moment and think of it another way round, while we are worrying about this colour matching this, do my shoes go with this, do these earrings work with this? Take a breath and remember that somewhere in the middle of all these elements coming together, there is the most important item. That is easily you!
We are bombarded with ideas for our wedding, from every corner. Especially when it comes to what and how we wear. Accessories, hair and makeup are how the whole thing comes together, and I’d like to offer some sage words on how to approach the whole subject!
Ok, so you have your beautiful gown, it might have some back detail or no back? Pretty sleeves or a high neckline…
How should I wear my hair? Friends and family are telling me that I shouldn’t let it cover back, shoulders, neckline…
But I don’t like my hair up? The breaking news is, that you should never let your gown dictate your hairstyle. The “feel” of your gown, be it boho, vintage, retro can give you a direction, but you really need to feel like you on your wedding day.
I often hear Mothers of the Bride saying ” Everyone sees the back!” and yes of course everyone does see the back. They also spend a lot of time looking at the front and sides, and just you in general! Most of your photos will be from the front as well. When your partner sees you, they will first see you from the front.
So with that in mind, and before we too caught up with plaits, curls in the back of our updos, just remember that they will want to see you, you as a bride, not somebody they do not recognise.
Hair accessories can be seen as quite scary for a bride, they often get relegated to that “back” again. Hair accessories do have a lot of potential however in linking you with your dress, think of them as a full stop, a frame, a finishing touch. Tiaras are making a come back, your hairdresser will love a hair vine (they are a doddle to arrange and fix in) and an embellished comb or clip will just add that dressed look that you do need on the day. Your gown and the feeling you want for the day will guide direction, obviously your gown is a big part of your day, it’s a pretty big deal. Adding accessories to your perfect wedding ensemble is the best way to bring yourself to the level of your wedding dress, so you are wearing the dress, the dress is not wearing you.
Let’s talk jewellery, again if you want to wear your great aunt’s locket, even if it doesn’t “go”, that’s absolutely fine. Your outfit should make you happy, but I would caution with the following, just try a small dangle earring, a necklace however small will take the focus away from your face, we still need to see “you”. However you decide, I will stick with the most important part of this advice, a statement necklace can easily end up looking false, and as if you’ve tried a little too hard.
Makeup, all you need to focus on is lips and eyes. These should be emphasised and make sure your foundation has lots of staying power. Again you must feel like yourself.
With all the above in mind, perhaps it doesn’t matter if we don’t see it all together till the day. We’ve chosen our hair style how we like it, and our makeup is making us feel like the best version ever. We love our bridal gown and well chosen accessories. On the Big Day it will all come together, and you will be thrilled with the result, maybe that in its self is the most fabulous surprise and treat to be looked forward to!
